Coach's criticism ignites Duquesne's Marhold

After a 22-point blowout loss Feb. 5 against George Washington, Duquesne coach Jim Ferry blasted his team's lack of effort, called into question the leadership of some upperclassmen and called out senior post player Andre Marhold, saying "he has given us nothing for quite a long time."

It was that last bit -- calling out a player publicly -- that got some people's attention because coaches ordinarily don't go that route. But Ferry has been a straight shooter since he arrived and was being honest about why Marhold was no longer a starter.

Marhold, however, had no problem with what Ferry said because he knew he wasn't getting the job done and needed a wake-up call.

"I was OK with it because I am not good at communicating things often and, sometimes, I probably don't always hear what people are saying," Marhold said, then laughed. "But me sitting on the bench and hearing my coach say I am not helping the team, well, that's a good way to get my attention."

Clearly, Ferry's motivational tactic worked because Marhold had an excellent game in the loss against Xavier last Saturday and earned his way back into the starting lineup for the Dukes stunning, 84-83 win Thursday night at Temple.

In fact, since Ferry called him out, Marhold has been the Dukes' best player. He scored nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds against the Musketeers and posted 15 points and 15 rebounds against the Owls.

  • Matchup: Duquesne (8-16, 1-9 Atlantic 10) vs. Rhode Island (7-16, 2-9), 7 p.m. today, Palumbo Center.

  • Radio: WPGB-FM (104.7).

  • Duquesne: Ended an 11-game losing streak Thursday with 84-83 win at Temple. ... Andre Marhold has scored 24 points and grabbed 25 rebounds in past two games. ... Marhold started against Temple after being a reserve for several weeks. ... Average 12.6 turnovers per game.

  • Rhode Island: Ended 6-game losing streak with a 75-72 win Wednesday against Dayton. ... Leading scorer is Xavier Munford (17.5 ppg). ... Leads series with Duquesne, 28-24, but is 11-12 in games in Pittsburgh. ... Won a thriller, 77-76, in 2011 in last trip here.

  • Hidden stat: Duquesne has lost five home games in a row; Rhode Island has lost three consecutive road games.

Marhold also had three blocked shots in the waning moments of the Temple game, and they were huge as the Dukes won by one point. Every possession was crucial.

He said that as soon as he heard Ferry's comments he knew his coach was right and decided to make the necessary changes to his attitude and work habits to ensure that he could finish his senior year the right way and help his team win some games down the stretch.

"I just used Coach's comments as motivation, decided I needed to take a look in the mirror and see what it was that I could do better," Marhold said. "I just knew that I needed to change, go back to being that leader, getting our guys hyped and ready, working hard at practice, doing everything in my power to make changes so that I can become not just a better player but also a better person.

"I feel like I know what he is talking about, he wants us not just to play hard but to make plays as well. My mentality has changed. Now, I am thinking in terms of making plays.

"Really, it was on me, I know that, and I just want to make sure that I keep working hard and really improving and being a leader the rest of the way here."

Marhold will start tonight when Duquesne (8-16, 1-8 Atlantic 10) plays host to Rhode Island (7-16, 2-8). He said he plans on being a starter the rest of the way.

"I need to keep this going," he said. "Just working hard and being a leader and helping us win games, that's where my focus needs to be."

The win against Temple broke an 11-game losing streak, but Marhold said that is behind the Dukes, who are now trying to mount a winning streak.

"We experienced a big win before -- against West Virginia -- then got all happy and came out the next game flat and got blown out of the gym by team we could beat [Robert Morris], so we know what that is like and aren't going to do that again," Marhold said. "Guys got a taste of winning and want more, and there were a lot of guys in [Friday] early watching film, working out and getting focused on our next game.

"I know we are going to come out ready to play and play as hard on defense as we did against Temple and, if we do that and rebound, we will have a great chance to win."

Dr. Ben Carson for President? 'I'll Leave That Up to God'

ABC News' Kari Rea reports:

It's a forum that isn't known for making news - so Dr. Ben Carson says the buzz created by his speech at last week's National Prayer Breakfast, including a Wall Street Journal staff editorial with the headline "Ben Carson For President" - came as a surprise.

"I don't think it was particularly political," Carson, the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins, told ABC's Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl during an interview for " This Week." "You know, I'm a physician. I like to diagnose things. And, you know, I've diagnosed some pretty, pretty significant issues that I think a lot of people resonate with."

With an audience that included President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, Carson spoke out about political correctness, health care and taxes at the breakfast. In his roughly 23-minute address, Carson called for a private health care savings plan and a flat tax for all Americans. His address has since gone viral, racking up more than two million views on YouTube.

The speech isn't Carson's first foray into national politics. In 2008, President George W. Bush awarded the successful brain surgeon the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.

On Sunday, Carson criticized some of President Obama's policies but also called him a "very talented politician."

"There are a number of policies that I don't believe lead to the growth of our nation and don't lead to the elevation of our nation," Carson added. "I don't want to sit here and say all of his policies are bad."

He also offered his diagnosis for today's political environment.

"What I would like to see more often in this nation is an open and intelligent conversation, not people just casting aspersions at each other," Carson said on "This Week." "I mean, it's unbelievable to me the way people act like third graders. And if somebody doesn't agree with them, they're this and they're that and, you know - it comes from both sides. And it's just so infantile."

As for his own ambitions, Carson, 61, is retiring from practicing medicine this summer. But he told Jonathan Karl he's not ruling out a future bid for political office.

"That's not my intention," he said. "But I always say, 'I'll leave that up to God.'"

2 Chainz Poses With Officers, After Being Arrested

While you were sleeping, the Hair Weave Killer, was getting locked up in Maryland. On Valentines Day, 2 Chainz (real name Tauheed Epps) was arrested while enroute to a show at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). While the details are still fuzzy, here?s what we know thus far.

According to 2 Chainz, he and his camp were headed to the university, when they were somehow pulled over and it was discovered that someone (2 Chainz) had a weed grinder. After the incident, 2 Chainz tweeted what happened, writing:

Here?s 2 Chainz at UMES, after his release.

Screen shot 2013-02-15 at 6.54.18 AM

In any event, this isn?t the Atlanta rappers first time having a run-in with police. Last year, he was arrested for having brass knuckles. He recounted the story to MTV, saying:

??They tried to assassinate my character, they tried to assassinate my swag. It was just a negative dilemma earlier where someone misconstrued a piece of jewelry for a weapon and stuff. ? I do exclusive pieces. My pieces are actual conversation pieces, like, literally. When you see my gold, when you see my stuff, it?s something to conversate about. People weren?t doing four-finger rings and all that. I just like to set myself apart, so I definitely wasn?t trying to beat nobody up on the airplane or nothing.?

Stay tuned, as we get more facts about his UMES arrest. P.S. Does a weed grinder warrant an arrest??

Jamie Henn: Time for President Obama to Choose Sides on Keystone XL

The two sides in the fight over the Keystone XL were put in sharp relief this morning in Washington, D.C.

Over at the headquarters of the American Petroleum Institute, the largest front-group for the fossil fuel industry, PR flacks were scrambling to pull together a conference call with reporters to trot out more misinformation about the pipeline.

Meanwhile, over at the White House, 48 environmental, civil rights, and community leaders from across the country joined together for a historic display of civil disobedience to push President Obama to deny the Keystone XL and address the climate crisis.

Now, it's time for President Obama to choose which side he's on. He can side with the fossil fuel industry and people like API President Jack Gerard, who was a top Mitt Romney supporter, and the Koch Brothers, who would reap huge benefits from Keystone XL. Or, he can stand with the coalition of environmentalists, ranchers, farmers, young people, labor unions, and civil rights groups who have come together to oppose Keystone XL.

2013-02-13-barack.jpg

That coalition, and the people arrested at this morning's demonstration, are the same people who helped elect President Obama and can now help push forward his agenda.

It includes business leaders like Danny Kennedy, the CEO of Sungevity, a solar company in California that is pioneering new ways of massively scaling up solar installations (and creating lots of new jobs in the process); civil rights heroes, like Julian Bond, who helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and served as the president of the NAACP; ranchers like Randy Thompson, who has been leading the fight against Keystone XL in Nebraska and came all the way to D.C. today to get arrested at the White House; and student activists, like Jacklyn Gil, the daughter of two Colombian immigrants who is now leading a fossil fuel divestment campaign at Brandeis University and joined the protest this morning.

2013-02-13-dannyandjackie.jpg
Danny Kennedy and Jacklyn Gil sit together at Wednesday, Feb 13's White House sit-in

Yes, the fossil fuel industry has most of the money. But we've got the people. This Sunday, tens of thousands are expected to attend the "Forward on Climate" rally here in Washington, D.C. to push the president to live up to his climate rhetoric. Volunteers have organized over 100 buses to bring people from all across the country. Hundreds of students, many of them also working on this growing fossil fuel divestment campaign, are coming into town.

President Obama should be familiar with the feeling of energy and momentum in the climate movement right now: it's the same grassroots spirit that powered him to the White House in the first place.

Keystone XL isn't just a test of whether Obama can live up to his own rhetoric, it's a test of whether he can live up to the movement that helped elect him. This is a time for him to dig deep, summon up some courage, stand up to Big Oil, and finally reject this dirty pipeline once and for all. We'll be there by the thousands pushing him forward.

Senate, White House struggle over Hagel impasse

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Struggling to break an impasse, Senate Democrats set a test vote Thursday on whether to advance Chuck Hagel's nomination as defense secretary after Republicans blocked speedy confirmation of their former colleague and Vietnam combat veteran.

Hours of behind-the-scenes talks yielded the decision by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, but no clear sign of whether President Barack Obama's nominee would receive the 60 votes required to move the Senate to a final vote on whether to confirm him. Democratic officials said the vote was scheduled with only a handful of votes needed to clear the threshold.

Sen. John McCain of Arizona led the opposition to Hagel's confirmation, but he said he would not object to the test vote, called cloture.

The remaining "yes" votes remain elusive, even after the White House responded to McCain's demand for information unrelated to Hagel. McCain and Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire said they would delay the vote until they got a more detailed accounting of Obama's actions on the night of the attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, where Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed. Republicans have sought to portray Obama as being out of touch during the raid and demanded to know whether Obama spoke to any Libyan official during the Sept. 11 assault.

The Republicans' demand has had the effect of a filibuster.

The White House responded Thursday by saying former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Libyan President Mohamed Magariaf on Obama's behalf on Sept. 11 to coordinate additional support to protect Americans in Libya, White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler wrote the senators. Obama spoke to Magariaf on the evening of Sept. 12, she said.

The Obama administration also had disclosed the calls at the time they were made.

A White House official said Thursday that if there had been a need to push the Libyans to do something, Obama would have called, but the official said the Libyans were trying to do the right thing and were being as helpful as possible. Moreover, the official, discussing internal communications only on the condition of anonymity, said the earlier call with Clinton had gone well.

Reid said it was "shocking" and "tragic" that the GOP would attempt to block Hagel's nomination at a time when the U.S. military is engaged in so many places around the world. "Not a single nominee for secretary of defense ever in the history of our country has been filibustered," he said in a speech on the Senate floor.

Reid said Republicans notified him Wednesday night they would withhold the votes needed to advance Hagel's nomination. Reid said he considered that a "full-scale filibuster" because the Republican strategy would prevent Hagel's nomination from getting the required 60 votes.

Republicans are seeking "extraneous requests" for information that will never be satisfied, Reid said. "The pattern has been clear for months: as soon as President Obama's administration responds to one request, Republicans devise another, more outlandish request," Reid said.

A full Senate vote on Hagel, a former two-term Republican senator from Nebraska and twice-wounded Vietnam veteran, was expected to be held Friday after Reid filed a motion to limit debate. While Democrats hold a 55-45 edge in the Senate and have the numbers to confirm Hagel on a majority vote, they need the support of five Republicans to clear the way for a majority vote.

Two Republicans ? Sens. Thad Cochran of Mississippi and Mike Johanns of Nebraska ? have announced their support for Hagel. A third, Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, has said she will vote against Hagel's confirmation, but would not join in a filibuster to block a final vote.

Graham said Wednesday that he would vote against ending debate on Hagel's nomination.

"There seems to not be much interest to hold this president accountable for a national security breakdown that led to the first ambassador being killed in the line of duty in over 30 years," Graham said. "No, the debate on Chuck Hagel is not over. It has not been serious. We don't have the information we need. And I'm going to fight the idea of jamming somebody through until we get answers about what the president did personally when it came to the Benghazi debacle."

McCain declined to say whether he would try to delay Hagel's confirmation if Obama did not provide an answer. "My position right now is I want an answer to the question," he said.

The nomination of John Brennan as CIA director is also being delayed; the Senate Intelligence Committee is pushing off a vote amid demands that the White House turn over more details about drone strikes against terror suspects and about the Benghazi attacks. Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein of California said a vote likely will be postponed till late February.

A bitterly divided Armed Services Committee on Tuesday voted to approve Hagel by a 14-11 vote, with all the panel's Democrats backing him. The committee's Republicans were unified in opposition to their onetime colleague, who will succeed Defense Secretary Leon Panetta if he's confirmed.

Obama "stands strongly" behind Hagel and believes he "will do a wonderful job," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said aboard Air Force One en route to Decatur, Ga., where the president traveled Thursday to speak about early childhood education.

If confirmed by the Senate, Hagel, 66, would take charge of the U.S. armed forces at a time of turmoil. Automatic cuts to the Pentagon's budget are looming, American troops in Afghanistan are being halved over the next year, North Korea has tested a nuclear weapon, Iran remains a threat in the Persian Gulf region, and Syria, Iraq, Libya, Egypt, Mali and Tunisia all are in a state of unrest.

At a Pentagon award ceremony on Thursday for former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Panetta said it was fitting to recognize her accomplishments on Valentine's Day. And he said the second-best Valentine's Day present would be for the Senate to confirm Hagel and allow Panetta and his wife to "get the hell out of town." He said he's got his belongings packed.

Hagel has faced intense opposition from Republicans, who have challenged his past statements and votes on Israel, Iran, Iraq and nuclear weapons.

Tibetan monk sets himself on fire in Nepal

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) ? A Tibetan monk doused himself with gasoline and set himself on fire in Nepal's capital Wednesday in what is believed to be the latest self-immolation to protest Chinese rule in Tibet.

Police official Keshav Adhikari said the man went inside a cafe, poured gasoline on himself and set himself on fire before police and locals were able to put out the fire and rush him to the hospital.

Adhikari says the man was about 21 years old and has yet to be identified. He is in critical condition and being treated at the Tribhuwan University Teaching Hospital in Katmandu.

Security has been tightened in the area around Boudhanath in the northeastern edge of Katmandu where most of the Tibetan exiles live and home to Buddhist temples and monasteries.

A local eyewitness who did not want to be identified said he saw the monk come out of the cafe, light himself on fire and run a few steps chanting slogans against China before he collapsed on the ground. Police officers and local people were able to put out the fire and send him to hospital.

Thousands of Tibetan exiles live in Nepal and occasionally protest against China. The Nepalese government has banned such protests, saying it cannot allow any activities against any friendly nation to take place in Nepal.

Nepal has allowed thousands of Tibetan exiles to live in the country as refugees, while hundreds more are allowed to pass through Nepal, traveling from Tibet to Dharmasala, India, where their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, lives in exile.

Nearly 100 Tibetan monks, nuns and lay people have set themselves on fire in various countries, mostly in ethnic Tibetan areas inside China, since 2009.

DPAC's ?Mary Poppins? is (More Than) ?Practically Perfect ...

MaryPoppinsSpotlightCountdownOnStageNow

?Mary Poppins,? the latest theatrical offering from Durham Performing Arts Center, provides a healthy dose of magic (no ?spoonful of sugar? needed) for both the young and the young at heart. For those who aren?t familiar with the classic tale, it focuses on the Banks family and their new nanny, Mary Poppins ( Madeline Trumble), who floats down from the sky on a magical umbrella and promptly turns the Banks? boring lives upside down. Full of larger-than-life musical numbers,? a vivacious cast, stunning sets, and a whole lot of ?wow,? DPAC?s version doesn?t disappoint long-time fans of the story or first-timers.

The magic starts the moment Mary Poppins enters the Banks? home and doesn?t let up until the very end. Even the most adult of viewers are left wondering how Mary fits large objects?including a tall plant and hat stand?in her tiny bag, and that?s just one of the many tricks this production has up its sleeve. Chimney-sweep Bert (Con O?Shea-Creal) walks on the ceiling and produces real-life flowers from a chalk drawing; Mary herself flies high in the air, and sets seem to appear out of nowhere.

While intricate sets that float effortlessly into place are the norm at DPAC, this production?s sets are truly spectacular. Particularly notable is the Banks? charming home, which looks like something out of a pop-up storybook, and the vibrantly colorful chalk-drawing world the Banks children are transported into.

Trumble, with her sweet voice and cheeky comedy, perfectly embodies the rule of sweet-but-stern Mary Poppins, and she?s backed by some superb supporting performers. O?Shea-Creal?s Bert charms with his easy smile, while Chris K. Hoch is perfect as serious father, George Banks. And, doing double duty as the Bird Woman and replacement-nanny, Miss Andrews, ?Karen Murphy touches and terrorizes hearts, respectively, in her all too brief time on stage.

While all of the musical numbers prove fun and engaging, certain songs are easy hits. Highlights include ?Jolly Holiday,? and ?Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,? which had audience members clapping along at Tuesday night?s performance. Bouncy choreography and sharp sound serve as complements to a show that, like Poppins herself, is practically perfect in every way.

Iran releases daughters of opposition leader

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iranian prosecutors have released the daughters of reformist opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi after they were briefly summoned for questioning, the semi-official ILNA news agency reported on Monday.

ILNA quoted an unnamed official as saying the daughters, Zahra and Narges Mousavi, had been summoned to give "explanations." It did not elaborate.

An earlier report by opposition website Kaleme.com said the two were taken into custody after security agents searched their homes. The two women have campaigned to free their parents, who are both under house arrest, urging authorities to release them in an open letter in January.

The incident comes just days before the second anniversary of massive protests against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, which falls on Wednesday.

Mir Hossein Mousavi was the leader of the Green Movement in the 2009 presidential race against Ahmadinejad. Amid allegations of vote rigging after Ahmadinejad won, he led massive opposition protests.

Mousavi, his wife Zahra Rahnavard and another Ahmadinejad challenger, Mahdi Karroubi, have been under house arrest since February 2011. No formal charges have been made against them.

Find a book that you can turn to for encouragement. Some people may look to a religious text, while others might look for inspiring quotes. A tangible piece of writing to which you can return again and again can be comforting and encouraging.

You must have a positive attitude in order to grow as an individual. A negative attitude never gets anyone too far, and it can actually work against you. Assure yourself that positivity is the only way to see constructive changes in your life.

You should always aspire to becoming the best. Follow your passions to decide what to excel at. You can?t be the best at everything, but you can inspire people in the same field as you. Try boosting your worth inside your field so that you can boost your self-esteem as well.

Making yourself number one, and not overextending yourself, is very important. While you shouldn?t make pursuing happiness the be all and end all in your life, it is important to remember that you must make your own happiness. To be a happier person and succeed in personal growth, you must be true to your authentic self and your own sense of right and wrong.

In order to see, as well as keep the changes you want in your life, you know that you must put in time and hard work. You have to stay with it to make changes that will get results. A more fulfilling life can be just as accessible as this article.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Any model will tell you: It's hard to walk down a catwalk.

Especially when you're an actual cat.

Designer Tracy Reese's fall-winter show had a guest model, of the feline variety. The cat was supposed to be walked on a leash, but was a bit frightened, the designer explained backstage, and had to be cradled in the model's arms for its one trip down the catwalk. Er, runway.

The cat, named Lily, was a 4-year-old Siamese Blue Point rescue cat, according to Purina ONE, which sponsored the show along with Reese and provided the feline visitor. The pet food company says it wants to bring attention to the fact that leash-training can benefit cats by incorporating activity into their lives.

As for the fashion, Lily may have been timid, but Reese's designs were the opposite ? full of mixed prints and bold colors, like the floral-printed neoprene frock in pink, orange and black that accompanied the cat-bearing model.

Reese is perhaps best known for the shimmery pink and silvery-blue dress that Michelle Obama wore to the Democratic National Convention, and her dresses didn't disappoint on Sunday, including a sleek black knee-length number with huge red flowers on it, its dainty shape contrasting nicely with the boldness of the print.

From flowers to animals: There were animal prints all over the collection. A cheetah-print coat opened the show, paired with a black lace shirt and a charcoal pant. The collection also included a cheetah tunic covering a cheetah skirt, a zebra-print trench over a crepe floral dress and an "animal jacquard" coat in tan and black worn over a sequined sweater.

"There are so many cool ways to use animal prints," Reese said backstage. "Subtle and not so subtle. Even in the beading."

Reese said she hoped women would become bolder about mixing prints ? like pairing an animal print with a floral. "Most women like to wear only one print at a time. But I like to mix them, and I wanted to open up the conversation a bit."

The designer also pointed out a happy change on her runway: a focus on flat shoes.

"I'm so glad, because flats are my life!" Reese said. "These shoes are comfortable, useful and wearable. And fashionable. We're not talking about the flats you wear to the office and then change into your heels."

Short jackets also had a frequent presence on the runway, sometimes in eye-popping colors like a bright pink "lipstick leather," or in a cute scarlet tartan.

But back to the cat: Cute as she was, the designer, alas, did not get to hold her.

"I'm highly allergic," Reese confessed.
