Our Columnists' Lingerie Picks of the Month: October

Kristina: Lucky me! I am officially the proud owner of this beautiful Chantelle bra set from their Paris Paris collection. This exquisite group features an intricate jacquard pattern which creates a convincing tromp l?oeil effect of delicate leavers lace. The effect is so remarkable that you can?t help but to touch and examine it in person just to believe your eyes. And since it is as comfortable as it is stylish, I predict this set will soon become a trusty staple in my lingerie wardrobe.

Karolina: Sockbox?s website sends me into a frenzy of lingerie lust that the world has never seen before.? There?s literally too many gorgeous garments there to behold ? and I seriously struggled to pick out this bodysuit from the rest of their offerings (just look at some of those robes ? utterly stunning, and perfect for swishing around the house? Or maybe even somewhere a little more glamorous!).? The Gentle Orchid Bodysuit stood out to me in particular as it?s so fantastically luxurious and versatile.? The details are just perfect: the flowing lace, oversized chiffon bows and those adorable suspender clips.? Irresistible!

Laura: Another vote for Chantelle?s Paris-Paris collection! This looks like a lace overlay, but it?s actually a lace pattern stitched onto the bra cup. ?Not only is this cool and beautiful illusion, but it also makes for a smoother fit under clingy tops.

Marianne: With Halloween (my favorite holiday) here, it?s no wonder I?m feeling a little? vampy. ?Hopeless Lingerie?s ?Ellen? Elastic Body Harness?suits that mood eerily well. ?Despite its bold look, I can?see lots of?styling possibilites, as it could be worn not just?with any bra or bodysuit, but even over,?say, a fitted turtleneck dress to add a little?spice to your fall look. ?Hopeless Lingerie is handmade to order,?so the only downside is you can?t incorporate it into your?spooky costume, but its arrival would?surely give you?something to be thankful for in November. ?The harness is available in 6?sizes, with adjustable?straps all around for a perfected fit, and retails for $60.

Holly: The Lola Luxe Basque has been a hit for Bravissimo in several different colorways, and was recently released in this luscious blackberry version. While this basque is pretty, it?s also one of the most unique pieces on the market. The cups are designed to be truly supportive, and sizing goes up to a K cup in 30 through 38 bands. This is a basque that is ready for the bedroom or a long day at work. Previous versions of this have sold out rapidly, so make sure to grab your size as soon as you can! I?m not sure lots of size choice will be around for the holidays. Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

Dating Don'ts: How Not To Get Dumped | Clutch Magazine

I believe I?ve made it clear how I feel about relationship advice. Mostly, I find it utterly unhelpful. I think that relationships are so complicated and personal, that advice is not one person fits all. I especially hate gimmicky, quick-fix relationship advice that?s like ?The Magic Thing That Will Get You Married In 364 Days!? WORST! The only brand of dating advice I can stomach is the kind that?s empowering. And when I stumble upon it, I share it with you.

Last week, I had coffee with a good friend. We both started dating new guys we met online on the exact same day. (Weird, right?) That was a few months ago, and both relationships are still on and popping. During our coffee session, one of the things we talked about was how we both were having persistent, irrational anxiety about our relationships suddenly ending. Our shades of anxiety were a bit different. Mine has been taking the form of a recurring fear of being dumped out-of-the-blue.

The script in my head goes like this:

He didn?t text me back. That must mean he?s going to dump me. He said he wants to tell me about something. Is he going to dump me? He told me he needs to push back our meeting time for tonight. He must be thinking about dumping me.

OK. Now, you know my shameful self-script. I know it?s ridiculous. It?s not based in reality. It has nothing to do with my guy or his behavior. He didn?t text me back because he was?sleeping.?He wanted to tell me about something that happened?at work.?He pushed back our meeting time because he wanted to?clean his apartment before I came over.

My fears are based on things that have happened to me in the past. Specifically, the several times I got dumped out-of-the-blue, twice by people I was in unabashedly in love with. My way of dealing with the past hurt was to be hyper-vigilant in all future relationships. I?m constantly afraid I?m missing a sign or a cue like I might have in the past.

I?ve diagnosed myself with Post Traumatic Dating Disorder. Not to make light in any way of the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and it?s severe and often debilitating symptoms, but years of relationship disappointments can create their own emotionally traumatic side-effects. This particular brand of insanity, I blame on my PTDD.

Pursuant to our conversation, my friend sent me a relationship advice column, unearthed from the deep recesses of the internet, entitled?Dr. Rob?s Simple Advice To Ladies So You Don?t Get Dumped.

When asked for some advice to help women in their relationships Dr.?Rob Dobrenski, Ph.D.?says:

?A few years ago a large portion of my clientele was women, aged 21-35 or so. Most of them had what seemed to be potentially great relationships with their boyfriends. However, all the women had a common feature: a need ? for constant reassurance of the relationship?s stability ? The women would come to me seeking ways to lower their anxiety levels, feel less jealous about ex-girlfriends, develop ways to not freak out that their partner didn?t say ?I love you? often enough. I will tell you exactly what I told each of them ?There are no magic words, no breathing or muscle relaxation techniques, no amount of drugs (recreational or medicinal) that can take away all of the angst and distress if you insist on making a small number of erroneous and perhaps not entirely conscious assumptions.?

So what are these erroneous assumptions that are preventing women from enjoying our potentially great relationships? According to Dr. Rob the main one is that there is such a thing as a ?guarantee? in relationships or life in general.

NAIL ON HEAD. It?s fucking scary to think about losing someone you?ve really started to like. Instead of coming to terms with this, I?ve been putting all my energy into micro-monitoring every single word exchanged between me and the boy instead of dealing with the real issue: the terrifying truth that there are no guarantees in life. I?ve been wasting my time. I need to stop.

But there is hope for me. Dr. Rob goes on to say:

?The good news is that once you?ve eliminated the aforementioned assumptions from your mind set, all the ?symptoms? will go away. No more worry ? finally some fucking inner peace. Why? Because you?ll know that while it?s painful to lose someone important to you, loss is a part of life and that you can be okay with that fact. You can and will move forward, as hard as it may be.?

Dr. Rob, I don?t know you, but can I hug you?

Hey Ami, YOU HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THE FUTURE OF THIS RELATIONSHIP, NOW GET OVER YOUR DAMN SELF AND GET ON WITH IT!

Thanks, Dr. Rob! I?m working on it.?

Fucking inner peace sounds nice.

Mike Holmgren might coach again

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap100...-in-his-future

So the guy misses coaching!? If/when things change in SD, what would you think of Mike Holmgren coming in as HC? Or even a GM position?

I'd be on the fence about it, but would prob give him a pass for the Cleveland years... He took GB to a Superbowl and Seattle, but he's a "retread"...

We're visiting the Browns this week so it would be a good opportunity for some talks with the guy.

Your thoughts?

NYC Continues Creating Jobs at All-Time Record Pace

?

?Good Morning. This is Mayor Mike Bloomberg.

?Businesses that want to stay competitive can?t rest on their laurels, and to keep our economy growing and creating jobs, neither can we. Last week, our Administration took major steps in three areas to ensure that when it comes to supporting entrepreneurs, as well as connecting New Yorkers to jobs, we continue to lead the nation.

?The first is an exciting new competition we?re launching ? called ?New York?s Next Top Makers? ? to promote 3D printing and innovation. 3D printing allows consumers to design and manufacture 3D objects, often at low cost. ?New York?s Next Top Makers? will act as a business accelerator, helping local entrepreneurs, inventors and designers bring their product ideas to life. From mid-November through next February, we?re encouraging any New Yorker to upload filmed pitches of a new product they want to design at NYC.gov. Products can be low- to high-tech, for the office or for the home. A panel of experts will choose five winners, and New Yorkers will vote to choose a sixth. The six finalists will then take part in a five-month design studio to further develop their ideas. And in September, one designer will win a cash prize.

?One of the companies that will help mentor the finalists ? Shapeways ? is also making a big investment in our manufacturing future. On Thursday, I visited what will become Shapeways? ?Factory of the Future? in Long Island City. Fully built out, it will be the biggest 3D printing facility for individual consumers in the world, able to manufacture five million products a year. Shapeways expects to create around 50 manufacturing jobs in its first year alone, and potentially more as the company grows ? more good news for our city, which continues to outpace the nation in new job growth.

?The second area where we?re acting to boost growth is our city?s network of centers that support jobseekers and small businesses. Last Monday, I visited?our newest Workforce1 Career center?located on Fordham Road in the Bronx. In addition to job placement and career development services, it will also include Bronx Business Solutions for business owners and a new center we?ve developed in partnership with Fordham?s School of Business called the Fordham Foundry. Part workshop, part think tank, the Foundry will allow Bronx small business owners to consult with Fordham faculty and access advanced business curriculum. And because the Foundry is housed with Bronx Business Solutions, Fordham students will have direct access to a range of free services to help get their business ideas off the ground. So far this year, NYC Business Solutions centers have provided more than 6,300 free services to over 4,200 businesses, including helping 140 entrepreneurs open their doors.

?Third and finally, last week we unveiled?a number of resources at NYC.gov?for small business owners to help them comply with City regulations while saving time and money. That includes 10 NYC ?starter guides? that provide the basics on how to start a business ? whether you?re opening a beauty salon, a restaurant or a dentist?s office.

?From traditional small businesses to ?Factories of the Future,? we?re supporting New York companies so they can keep creating the jobs our growing city needs.

?This is Mayor Mike Bloomberg. Thanks for listening.?

What would Rihanna say! Chris Brown pictured with on-off girlfriend Karrueche as they go for a spin in his sports car

By Eleanor Gower

|

He announced his split with model girlfriend Karrueche, citing his 'friendship' with Rihanna as a reason behind the break up.

But Chris Brown apparently spent the day with the model on Monday, with onlookers suggesting that the pair went to a studio in Burbank together.

The 23-year-old is reported to have left his house with Brown but in separate cars, according to Just Jared.

They are then reported to have stopped at a gas station together where Brown's bodyguard handed over cash for Tran's gas.

The bodyguard then accompanied Brown in the passenger seat of his black sports car.

Brown, who spent time with Rihanna at a Beverly Hills party over the weekend, released a statement confirming the split at the beginning of this month.?

He said: 'I have decided to be single to focus on my career. I love Karrueche very much but I don't want to see her hurt over my friendship with Rihanna.

'I'd rather be single allowing us to both be happy in our lives.'

However, he has released a new video where he apparently describes his mixed feelings about loving two women at the same time, which has been widely interpreted as a reference to his former love.

Today's sighting is not the first time speculation has been rife about a reconciliatory between the pair.

Karrueche was pictured leaving Brown's Hollywood home one morning wearing the same clothes from the night before, a few days after the split was announced.

Rihanna recently admitted to Oprah Winfrey that she still considers Chris to be the 'love of her life.'

In an interview which aired in August, the 24-year-old singer admitted that since the restraining order was dropped against Brown in February 2011, the pair have been working on their friendship.

She also admitted that her feelings are conflicting, saying: 'It's awkward because I still love him.'

Meanwhile, Brown was also making headlines for reasons other than his love life, with Radar reporting that he attacked one of his fans with a homophobic slur last Friday, calling them a 'f****.

Los Angeles resident Lucas Peter alleges he asked Brown for an autograph after spotting the singer and his entourage at the Arclight movie theatre in Hollywood.

'I approached Chris and asked him to sign my CD cover,' Lucas told the website.

'His bodyguard stopped me and said Chris wouldn't be signing, so I told him Rihanna signs all the time. That's when Chris stopped in the garage by the parking pay stand and yelled 'f*****' at me.

Lucas, who is an openly gay man, said he then got angry and asked Brown 'if he was going to beat Rihanna again.'

He alleges Brown responded by saying: 'I beat p***y' and then his bodyguard tried to scare me by saying, "'And I beat men."'

Most companies won't be early Win 8 adopters

3 hrs.

There was once a time when the launch of a new Windows operating system was a huge deal for the technology departments in many businesses. Not anymore. Microsoft's release of Windows 8 on Friday is likely to be a non-event for most companies???and some experts say many may never adopt it.?

The system may appear to offer something for everyone: touch-screen functionality for tablet enthusiasts, a slick new interface for the younger set, and multiple versions to make it compatible with traditional desktop PC software.?

Many businesses, though, say there is no compelling reason to adopt. Indeed, a large number have yet to make the transition to Windows 7 from Windows XP.?

"Windows 8 is, frankly, more of a consumer platform than it is a business platform, so it's not something that makes any sense from a business perspective at this juncture," said Doug Johnson, head of risk management policy at the American Bankers Association, whose members are among the world's biggest technology buyers. "There is really no additional business functionality that Windows 8 gives you that I see."?

For most of the past two decades, that sort of comment about a new version of Windows might have set off panic in Microsoft's Redmond, Washington, headquarters. Not now. Windows 8, in a stark reflection of how the technology business is changing, will rise or fall on how it is received in the consumer market.?

That doesn't mean Microsoft executives are publicly saying they won't be going after enterprise customers with the radical new version of its flagship product.?

"The lines between the consumer and the enterprise are blurring," said Ron Markezich, head of Microsoft's Enterprise & Partner Group. "Business customers are looking forward to Windows 8 because they don't have to compromise between tablet and PC."?

But Microsoft's main goal is to show it can master the new touch-optimized, mobile forms of computing pioneered by Apple and Google.?Its colorful, action-packed advertising for the system are aimed at a young, free-wheeling audience, and its new Surface tablets are being positioned squarely as consumer devices.?

Lukewarm

Corporate customers have been lukewarm about the product even after test versions have been available for more than a year.?

Car maker Volkswagen, which only last year moved 60,000 PCs onto Windows 7, is not planning to make another drastic shift anytime soon.?

VW's head of IT, Martin Eickhoff, said his team was "excited to evaluate the new tablet features" but would wait until Windows 8's release to assess its potential benefits.?

That's not unusual, as corporations generally test a new system for 12 to 18 months before planning to adopt it, meaning enterprise take-up of most versions of Windows???except for the unpopular Vista???have only usually happened two or three years after launch.?

This time even that pattern might not happen.?

Michael Silver, an analyst at technology research firm Gartner, expects minimal corporate adoption over the life of the new system: "We believe 90 percent of large organizations will not deploy Windows 8 broadly, and at its peak, we expect about 20 percent of PCs in large organizations will run Windows 8," he said.?

Windows recedes

This may not be a huge problem for Microsoft.?

For one thing, the company gets 40 percent of its overall revenue from multi-year licensing deals with enterprises???companies, government departments and universities???which typically give customers rights to the newest version of its software.?

Essentially, Microsoft gets paid regardless of what version of Windows many big customers actually use.?

And Windows is also declining in financial importance for Microsoft, although the sales of PCs often determine the strength of Microsoft's earnings. Five years ago, it accounted for almost 30 percent of Microsoft's sales. Last year it was 25 percent.?

Microsoft's success in selling to businesses, in the short term at least, depends less on Windows than on its Office products and its fast-growing server and tools division.?

One institution that has made an early move to Windows 8 is Seton Hall University in New Jersey. The school has already deployed tablets and laptops running pre-release versions of Windows 8 to its freshman and junior classes???with help from Microsoft, which subsidized the effort with free consulting time.?

"The benefit of the upgrade to Windows 8 for me is that it's touch friendly. Lots of the devices that we have in the community could benefit," said Stephen Landry, Seton Hall's chief information officer.?

Landry said his students overwhelmingly liked the new system, after a brief training session, but he acknowledged that many of his peers in higher education were not ready to move so fast.?

"Talking to a lot of CIOs, they are not ready to jump into Windows 8 with both feet yet. They are taking a wait-and-see attitude. They are thinking 'That's a lot of work, I need to upgrade System Center (Microsoft's IT management platform), I need to have a little different process for managing the back end.' A lot of CIOs I've talked to, they are saying I'm not really seeing a benefit."?

Steven Hanna, chief information officer of Kennametal Inc., an industrial parts and tools manufacturer based in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, said his company has only just moved onto Windows 7, and has no plans to introduce Windows 8 broadly in the near future. But he may deploy it selectively for employees who can make use of the touch-screen, such as traveling sales reps.?

"The mobility for the sales force, to put all the material and the ability to do basic transactions in their hands, is going to be a phenomenal driver for us," said Hanna. "We're doing some piloting with iPads, but I'm excited to see the Windows stuff come out."?

This appears to be the most likely route for Windows 8 into the workplace. But even this will not be simple because Windows 8 is really two operating systems.?

The standard Windows 8 for devices with Intel Corp x86 chips will run old Microsoft applications and generally fit seamlessly into companies' networks and security systems, just like any Windows PC. But Windows RT, the version for devices powered by ARM Holdings chips???such as Microsoft's new Surface tablet???will not run legacy applications and require more work to integrate.?

Moving from XP

Even as it launches Windows 8, a key priority for Microsoft is to get customers off the decade-old Windows XP???which still runs on 41 percent of the world's 1.5 billion PCs. For the last three years, it has urged enterprise customers to move to Windows 7, and it has said it does not expect organizations to drop those plans because of Windows 8.?

That effectively means many companies will downgrade new PCs to run on Windows 7, not 8, over the next few years.?

But if people start bringing Microsoft's new Surface tablet to work, or any of the other new Windows 8 devices, Microsoft is hoping corporate IT managers will welcome them with open arms.?

"Some organizations, when they look at Windows 8 Intel tablets, they are going to like them because they are manageable," said Michael Cherry, an analyst at Directions on Microsoft, an independent consultancy that helps customers understand the company. "When they look at RT they are going to be disappointed, because it's no easier to manage than an iPad." '

Pesticides put bumblebee colonies at risk of failure

OSLO | Sun Oct 21, 2012 1:41pm EDT

OSLO (Reuters) - Pesticides used in farming are also killing worker bumblebees and damaging their ability to gather food, meaning colonies that are vital for plant pollination are more likely to fail when they are used, a study showed on Sunday.

The United Nations has estimated that a third of all plant-based foods eaten by people depend on bee pollination and scientists have been baffled by plummeting numbers of bees, mainly in North America and Europe, in recent years.

British scientists said they exposed colonies of 40 bumblebees, which are bigger than the more common honeybee, to the pesticides neonicotinoid and pyrethroid over four weeks at levels similar to those in fields.

Neonicotinoids are nicotine-like chemicals used to protect various crops from locusts, aphids and other pests.

"Chronic exposure ... impairs natural foraging behavior and increases worker mortality, leading to significant reductions in brood development and colony success," the scientists wrote in the report in the journal Nature on Sunday.

Exposure to a combination of the two pesticides "increases the propensity of colonies to fail", according to the researchers at Royal Holloway, University of London.

A 2011 U.N. report estimated that bees and other pollinators such as butterflies, beetles or birds do work worth 153 billion euros ($200 billion) a year to the human economy and are in decline in many nations.

The findings underscored the importance of wider testing of pesticides to ensure they do not also target bees, it said.

France banned a neonicotinoid pesticide made by Swiss agrochemicals group Syngenta in June, citing evidence of a threat to the country's bees. A report last month, however, said that the original research was flawed.

"My guess is that the decline of bees is like a jigsaw -there are probably a lot of pieces to put into place. This is probably a very important piece of that jigsaw," lead author Richard Gill told Reuters of the findings about pesticides.

PARASITES

In a separate commentary in Nature, Juliet Osborne of the University of Exeter in England said the study underscored the need to understand all factors that may contribute to harm bees and to "Colony Collapse Disorder".

"For example, we have as yet no convincing demonstration of the relative effects of pesticides on bee colonies compared to the effects of parasites, pathogens and foraging resources," she wrote.

Gill endorsed recommendations by the European Food Safety Authority for longer testing on adult bees and larvae, new ways of assessing cumulative exposure to toxins and separate assessments for different bee species.

He said previous studies had mostly examined the impact of pesticides on individual bees, rather than colonies. Bumblebees form colonies of a few dozen bees, while honeybees can number up to tens of thousands.

"Effects at the individual level can have a major knock-on effect at the colony level. That's the novelty of the study," he said.

The average number of bees lost in the experiment - both dead in the nesting box and failing to return - was about two-thirds of the total for bees exposed to a combination of the two pesticides against a third for a control, exposed to neither.

Bumblebees exposed to a combination of pesticides were about half as successful at gathering pollen, used as food, compared to a control. They also devoted more workers to collecting food, meaning fewer were raising larvae.

Other experts said more research was needed. "It certainly wouldn't be fair to say that this research spells doom for wild bees," said James Cresswell of the University of Exeter.

NBC/WSJ poll: 2012 Presidential contest now tied

NBC's David Gregory makes sense of new polls showing conflicting leads in the 2012 presidential race.

By NBC's Mark Murray, Senior Political Editor

?

Heading into Monday's final debate and with just over two weeks until Election Day, President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney are now tied nationally, according the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

Obama and Romney both get 47 percent among likely voters in the latest edition of the poll, conducted entirely in the aftermath of the second presidential debate last Monday. In the last national NBC/WSJ poll, which was conducted before debate season began, the president held a narrow, three-point lead over his GOP challenger, 49 percent to 46 percent.

But among the wider pool of all registered voters in this new survey, Obama is ahead of Romney by five points, 49 percent to 44 percent.

Looking at some of the most important demographic groups, Romney leads among men (53 percent to 43 percent), Obama is up with women (51 percent to 43 percent) and they are essentially tied among voters in the Midwest.

The full poll ? which was conducted Oct. 17-20 among 1,000 registered voters and 816 likely voters ? will be released at 6:30 pm ET tonight.

The margin of error is plus-minus 3.1 percentage points for the sample of registered voters and plus-minus 3.43 percentage points for the sample of likely voters.?

Police in Kuwait teargas opposition protesters

KUWAIT (Reuters) - Police in Kuwait used teargas, stun grenades and baton charges on Sunday to disperse tens of thousands of demonstrators protesting against changes to the electoral law which the opposition has called a constitutional coup by the government.

Demonstrators gathered in various parts of the capital, Kuwait City, to march towards the government's headquarters, but riot police swiftly surrounded some groups and used teargas and stun grenades to disperse them, Reuters witnesses said.

A medical source said at least 29 people had been admitted to hospital, most of them suffering from teargas inhalation or from baton bruises. At least 15 people, including two former MPs and a reporter, were detained. An opposition activist estimated that up to 50,000 people had gathered in different locations.

The opposition decided to take to the streets after the government - which is dominated by the ruling Al-Sabah family - announced last week it was calling elections for December 1 and would change the electoral law "to preserve national unity".

The announcement was the latest move in an intensifying power struggle between the ruling establishment and parliament that has seen eight governments come and go since the emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, came to power in 2006.

The 83-year-old dissolved parliament on October 7. It was the sixth time the oil-rich state and key U.S. ally had disbanded its legislature since early 2006. Its oil wealth and a generous welfare state have helped Kuwait avoid the kind of "Arab Spring" protests that toppled leaders elsewhere in the region.

Before Sunday's protest got underway, the authorities had promised to "decisively confront" demonstrators.

Witnesses said protesters who had initially been dispersed later regrouped to form a crowd estimated at more than 20,000 at a main road near Kuwait Towers, a seaside landmark in the Gulf oil producer.

"The decree is void, void," some protesters chanted, referring to the emir's order for a change to the election law. Demonstrators said they had were motivated by a feeling of injustice.

"We are entering a dark tunnel," said Salem al-Ajmi, a 30-year-old man, after police blocked him from reaching Kuwait Towers.

The protest ended just before midnight after police told demonstrators to leave or be evacuated by force, said news website www.alaan.cc.

Human rights lawyer Mohammed al-Humaidi said he estimated the number of people injured was as high as 100 rather than 29 and said some of them were in a serious condition, the same website reported.

Kuwait has been convulsed by regular demonstrations since last year, and the opposition - including Islamists, liberals and tribal figures who won a majority in the 50-seat parliament in the last election in February - have rejected the emir's proposed changes and said they will boycott the vote.

The opposition has called the changes - which allow voters to choose only one candidate per electoral district - "a coup against the constitution", saying the reform would prevent its candidates from winning the majority they won in the last vote.

Forging an electoral alliance, which depends on supporters of one candidate voting for another in exchange for reciprocal support, would become unfeasible under the new system, they say.

CRITICISM OF THE EMIR

Kuwait's opposition has been emboldened after Arab protests toppled four heads of state.

Some have been demanding a constitutional state and for the emir to resign but for governments to be formed by majority groups in the 50-member assembly. Others have made more modest demands for the government formed by the emir to be subject to full parliamentary scrutiny.

The Al-Sabah dynasty has ruled Kuwait for more than 250 years and although Kuwait allows more freedom of speech than some Gulf states, the emir is seen as untouchable and is referred to as "immune and inviolable" in the constitution.

Kuwaiti authorities arrested two opposition politicians on Thursday and interrogated a third after they made comments seen as criticizing the emir.

The events prompted the Al-Sabah family to issue a rare statement on Thursday calling for obedience to the emir.

On Monday, police and protesters fought over a barricaded street after 5,000 people demonstrated outside parliament. Security forces arrested at least five people, including two former members of parliament.

The deepening crisis has taken its toll on the stock market, which dropped as much as 3.4 percent on Sunday, heading for its biggest daily fall since mid-2009, when shares were hit by the global financial crisis.

The crisis escalated in June this year when the top court annulled the last election which had been held in February, reinstating the previous, more government-friendly assembly.

Unlike other Gulf Arab states, Kuwait enjoys a more open political system that allows some parliamentary scrutiny over government decisions. But the emir still holds key levers of power, including appointing the prime minister.

The turmoil has not only paralyzed the political system but also blocked major economic development plans.

Sheikh Sabah warned in a speech on Friday that the recent political turmoil could lead to "strife that could be about to erupt and destroy our unity, disfigure our identity and tear apart our society into fragmented groups".

Cruise ship suffers crack during rough crossing

21 hrs.

P&O Cruises'?Ventura?ship?will have repairs made to a crack in an aluminium deck while it is in port in Southampton in the U.K. on?Friday, ahead of a two-day mini-cruise.

One of the welds directly below the Laguna Pool deck cracked open during a rough crossing across the?Bay of Biscay, leaving a?two-inch gap?width-ways across the deck, according to passengers posting on?board. The area was immediately taped off and, according to posts from passengers on?board, people on Deck 14 were told not to use their balconies.

A spokesperson for P&O said the crack had no ?structural?or safety issues,? and that the mini-cruise would set sail as planned tonight.

The incident first came to light on the?Cruise Critic message boards?when user "davedex"?wrote: ?Just read that Ventura has suffered a crack width wise by Breakers Bar.?

User?"drewlin"?wrote: "Just noticed on the P&O forum that a major problem has occurred on Ventura -- "Currently on Ventura and after a rough passage into the bob one of the deck welds on deck 17 overlooking the Laguna pool has split open leaving about a 2 inch gap across the deck. The area is now taped off."

User?"Thejuggler"?added: ?I suspect this has been a problem joint since it was built, but it has only just manifested itself. Stress fractures on steel are not unknown and there's no way every weld can be checked during construction. It's due for a refit, looks like an extra job is required.?

The 116,000-ton, 3,080-passenger Ventura, which was launched in 2008, will?go into dry dock?on March 22 next year, for scheduled repairs for 15 days.

The incident is also being talked about extensively on the?P&O Facebook page?where Peter Smith wrote: ?Ventura is now 4cm longer than Azura. Seriously, there is a 4cm gap across the whole starboard side of deck 16 which has caused a window pane to lose support. There is no other damage and no risk. The fact that the gap didn't close up after the ship stopped flexing shows that the welded joint must have been under considerable tension.?

P&O made the following statement: ?Repairs will be made to an aluminium deck on Ventura upon arrival in Southampton today. This has no structural strength or safety implications. Ventura will leave Southampton later today as planned for a two night cruise.?

THE RACE: Debate to juggle foreign policy, economy

Mitt Romney, and his wife Ann Romney attend the Archdiocese of New York's 67th Annual Alfred. E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)

The final presidential debate will focus on foreign policy. To stay on just the designated topic, however, President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney may have to steer clear of China and the Middle East.

They probably shouldn't discuss Europe or much of the rest of the world, either, at Monday's showdown in Boca Raton, Fla.

That's because it's nearly impossible to separate foreign policy from the American economy. What happens over there bears directly on jobs and living standards over here.

Tensions in the Middle East can send gasoline prices soaring. Recessions in Europe are pummeling U.S. manufacturers. And a trade war with China ? the world's second biggest economy ? would carry huge risks to both nations.

China is both the world's leading exporter and the United States' largest creditor.

Still, both Obama and Romney are taking swipes at Beijing. Romney says he'd tag China a "currency manipulator" if elected. The Obama administration recently has rolled out a series of restrictive measures against Chinese products and investment.

Neither man wants to look weak on China. And China bashing long has been a staple of American presidential races.

Yet no less an old China hand than Henry Kissinger suggests anti-China rhetoric from both candidates is "extremely deplorable" in such fragile economic times and with leadership in both nations in transition or up for a vote.

A conflict between China and the U.S. would be "a disaster for both countries," says the 89-year old former secretary of state. "It would be impossible to describe what a victory would look like."

In the U.S., opinion polls peg the economy as the No. 1 concern of voters.

Obama implored attendees at a boisterous campus rally in northern Virginia Friday to make sure to vote. "I want to finish the job," he said. Romney and running mate Paul Ryan were campaigning together in Florida.

AMD to cut nearly 1,800 jobs or 15 pct of workers

(AP) ? Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. says it will cut nearly 1,800 jobs, about 15 percent of its workforce, by the end of the year in order to reduce spending in the face of dwindling sales.

AMD is the world's second-biggest maker of microprocessors for personal computers and PC sales are falling. That's partly due to more consumers shifting away from PCs and doing their computing on tablets and smartphones.

CEO Rory Read says AMD needs to quickly restructure its business because trends that are reshaping the PC industry are happening faster than the company expected.

The job cuts were announced as AMD, which is based in Sunnyvale, Calif., reported that its revenue tumbled 25 percent in its fiscal fourth quarter that ended Sept. 29.

Roanoke County families can get flood insurance discount | WSLS 10

By: Roanoke County news release | WSLS-TV 10

Roanoke County Administrator Clay Goodman this week announced important information for residents with property located in flood hazard zones. The County has maintained a Class 8 designation in the Community Rating system (CRS), which means all National Flood Insurance program policies issued or renewed on property in flood hazard zones in Roanoke County, will receive a 10% discount on flood insurance premiums. Properties not deemed to be in a flood hazard zone but whose owners want flood insurance coverage will be offered a preferred risk policy.

As of August 31, 2012, there were 445 flood insurance policies in Roanoke County. Property coverage amounted to $89,685,400 with an annual written premium cost of $401,106. The total savings for citizens with flood insurance as a result of the County?s participation in CRS will be in excess of $40,000 per year.

The Community Rating System is a program initiated in 1990 by the Federal Insurance Administration to encourage and reward community mitigation activities that are beyond the basic requirements of the National Flood Insurance program. The goal is to reduce future flood losses, avoid economic disruption and human suffering, and promote awareness of the need for flood insurance.

There are 285 communities that participate in the national Flood Insurance program in Virginia. Of those, 22 communities have voluntarily committed to the Community Rating System program.

Dealing with a work crush - Relationships, Dating, & Marriage

Q: Several years ago I was quite smitten with a guy at work. But because he didn?t feel quite the same, we only developed a friendly non-physical relationship. He left the company and in time I was able to put it behind me. He recently returned to the company and I find that my feelings for him have been reawakened. Despite my several attempts to reconnect with him in a friendly way, he responds in only a polite and somewhat distant manner. This is really painful to me and is messing me up. We work in somewhat close proximity and it is unavoidable that I see him on a regular basis. I don?t see a way out of this situation. Leaving the job is not a possibility and every time I see him it hurts more and more. Do I ask him why he is acting this way and try to get some closure? Just start avoiding him to protect myself? What do I do?

? Hurting, South of Boston

<div which means that you need his boundaries. He shouldn't be rude to you, but it's great that he's being clear about his intentions (or lack thereof). This time around you won't get confused about the potential of the relationship.

Let?s imagine that this guy wrote me a letter. He?d probably say something like, ?Dear Meredith, I just returned to a job that has me working with a former friend who had a big crush on me. I think she has a crush on me again. How do I deal with her without leading her on?? And I?d probably say, ?Be polite. Keep your distance. Treat her with respect, but make it known that you won?t be offering more.?

My advice to you is to be friendly, smile, and treat him like any other co-worker. Set the tone. Show him that you can be nice without crossing lines. If it becomes unbearable and he?s actually being mean, you can have the talk. But for now, just try to keep him in perspective. You have other friends at work. You didn?t need him while he was gone and you don?t need him now. I?d rather him keep his distance than mess with your head.

Readers? Should she confront him? What is he doing? Could you work in a small office space with a former crush? Does he share her feelings? Is she being oversensitive? What should she do? Discuss.

? Meredith

Romney seeks Ohio votes as Obama preps for debate

(AP) ? Republicans Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan went back to school on Saturday to rally college students in all corners of all-important Ohio and hammer at President Barack Obama for going easy on China over unfair trade practices. Obama took precious time off the campaign trail to practice for the next debate against his GOP rival.

It was an unspoken acknowledgment of the importance that Obama attaches to upping his game in Debate No.2 that the president is largely dropping out of sight for five straight days in the final weeks of the race to prepare for Tuesday's encounter in Hempstead, N .Y.

Even while cloistered for debate prep at a sprawling resort in Williamsburg, Va., though, the president didn't completely cede the spotlight to Romney. His weekly radio and Internet address highlighted the Obama administration's work to revive the U.S. auto industry ? a message aimed squarely at working-class voters in manufacturing-heavy states like Ohio.

Romney, for his part, told a crowd of more than 3,000 people at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth that Obama was ducking an important decision on whether China is manipulating its currency to gain a trade advantage. A decision was due on Monday, but the Treasury Department said Friday the decision won't come until after global finance officials meet in early November. That means a decision is unlikely before the Nov. 6 election.

"It's time for us to stand up to China for their cheating," Romney declared. "It's got to stop."

Romney framed the issue squarely as a matter of jobs, saying cheap Chinese products were driving American companies out of business.

"We've got to get those jobs back and make trade to be fair," Romney declared.

Ryan, too, criticized the administration for failing to hold China accountable for its trade practices. During a morning appearance in northeastern Ohio at Youngstown State University, he told a crowd of about 1,400 that his hometown of Janesville, Wis., was much like theirs ? a "blue-collar, factory town" where the struggles of the auto industry hit home hard.

Ryan said the president had led the country toward a higher national debt, steeper taxes and insufficient job growth.

"We can't keep going down this path," he said. "We can't keep accepting this is the new normal."

The Wisconsin congressman then hopscotched to Bowling Green State University, in the northwestern part of the state, where he grabbed a bratwurst with mustard at the college Republicans' tailgate party before the school's football team took on his alma mater, Miami (Ohio) University.

The Obama campaign dismissed the Republicans' tough talk on China as nothing more than talk.

"Mitt Romney will never crack down on China's cheating ? just look at his record," Obama campaign spokesman Danny Kanner said in a statement. He said Romney had opposed Obama administration efforts to impose tariffs on Chinese-made tires and had invested in companies that shipped American jobs to China.

Obama's campaign upped its celebrity quotient as the two sides claw for any advantage in a tight race: Actor Morgan Freeman's commanding voice narrates a new ad telling voters that Obama has met the nation's challenges and "the last thing we should do is turn back now."

On Thursday, Bruce Springsteen will team up with former President Bill Clinton to rally Obama voters in Parma, Ohio, in what will be the singer's first political appearance this campaign. "The Boss" plans a second event Thursday, in Ames, Iowa. Springsteen campaigned for Obama in 2008, too.

Both sides are devoting huge time and effort to Ohio, this year's battleground to end all battlegrounds, where polls show Obama with a slight edge over Romney. Saturday's emphasis by the two sides on the auto industry and manufacturing jobs was designed to connect with blue-collar voters there.

Both sides also are keenly aware of the importance of this year's series of three presidential debates. Romney's strong performance in the first debate on Oct. 3 gave his campaign a much-needed jolt of energy, and the GOP nominee said his campaign still had post-debate momentum over Obama.

"His campaign is about smaller and smaller things, and our campaign is about bigger and bigger crowds, fighting for a bright future," Romney said on warm, sunny fall day.

Joe Biden's aggressive counterpunch in a debate with Ryan on Thursday cheered Democrats, but some critics thought the vice president overdid the theatrics with his frequent eye rolls, headshakes and broad grins suggesting incredulity.

Obama's campaign has acknowledged he didn't practice enough before his widely panned performance in the first debate. Some sessions were cut short, others canceled altogether, mainly because of developments in Libya, where four Americans were killed at a U.S. consulate.

The campaign has resisted calls from some Democrats to shake up Obama's debate team. Senior advisers David Axelrod and David Plouffe, along with former White House officials Anita Dunn and Ron Klain, still are running the preparations.

The president may have picked up a few pointers from Biden's debate with Ryan. Obama watched the vice presidential debate from aboard Air Force One and would chime in when Biden made a strong point.

"That's a good one," Obama said, according to aides.

Tuesday's town hall-style debate at Hofstra University will have an audience of about 80 undecided voters selected by the Gallup Organization. Moderator Candy Crowley of CNN will select from among questions on foreign and domestic policy submitted by the audience. The final debate, covering foreign policy, will be Oct. 22 in Boca Raton, Fla.

Romney spent nearly four hours Saturday morning at a Columbus hotel preparing for the next debate, then boarded his campaign bus for Shawnee State. From there, the Romney bus headed for Lebanon in southwest Ohio, where he gave a similar speech.

The Obama campaign isn't leaving Ohio unguarded for long: Michelle Obama will visit Delaware and Cleveland on Monday and the president will be in Athens on Wednesday.

To help keep Democratic ads like Freeman's new appeal for Obama up and running in the hotly contested battleground states, the president dispatched Biden to a pair of private fundraisers in Connecticut and New York on Saturday.

(AP) ? The fugitive son of Kyrgyzstan's deposed president has been arrested by police in London on a U.S. extradition warrant on suspicion of fraud, British and Kyrgyz authorities said Saturday.

London's Metropolitan Police said 34-year-old Maksim Bakiyev was arrested Friday afternoon and faces charges of conspiracy to defraud and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice between 2010 and 2012.

He was detained by officers from the force's extradition unit after agreeing to go to a police station in the upmarket Belgravia area of the city, and released on bail until his next court hearing on Dec. 7, it said.

The U.S. Embassy in Kyrgyzstan said that if convicted, Bakiyev could face a lengthy prison sentence.

Kyrgyz prosecutors say that companies owned by Bakiyev avoided almost $80 million in taxes on aviation fuel sold to suppliers of a U.S. air base in the country, a key refueling point for warplanes flying over Afghanistan and a major hub for combat troop movement.

Kyrgyz authorities said no extradition agreement exists between the Central Asian nation and Britain, but that Bakiyev could be extradited to face trial in the U.S.

The allegations date back to 2005, the year Maksim's father Kurmanbek Bakiyev came to power. His critics claim he soon started grooming his son as a successor.

Maksim Bakiyev was strongly disliked by large swaths of Kyrgyzstan's population and was popularly viewed as the main beneficiary of his father's rule.

The British government said the prosecution of corrupt former Kyrgyz officials could help the goal of ensuring stability in the troubled ex-Soviet nation.

"As part of those efforts, the leadership and people of Kyrgyzstan are keen to ensure that those accused of past abuses of power are brought before the courts to answer allegations against them," the British Embassy in Kyrgyzstan said Saturday.

Kurmanbek Bakiyev was ousted from power in a mass uprising in 2010 stoked by indignation over stagnant economic progress and rampant corruption.

He fled to Belarus, where he now lives under the auspices of its authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Kyrgyzstan has seen the overthrow of two governments in its short history since gaining independence amid the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

President Askar Akayev was cast out of power in May 2005 after a weeks-long sit-in protest against corruption and misrule in the center of the capital. Five years later, several dozen people were shot dead by government troops when angry mobs attacked the presidential administration building in unrest that led to Bakiyev's ouster.

The constitution introduced in 2010 created a more even balance of power between parliament and the presidency, aimed at avoiding the emergence of an authoritarian leadership.
